The history

The consortium for the protection of Vastedda della Valle del Belìce PDO was promoted by the Regional Breeders Association of Sicily, by the Institute of Zootechnics of the Faculty of Agriculture of Palermo, from the Regional Province of Agrigento, the Regional Province of Trapani, the Professional Agricultural Organizations and the Municipalities of Santa Margherita Belìce ", Sambuca di Sicilia, Menfi, Sciacca, Partanna and Castelvetrano, in which the exquisite sheep's cheese is produced.

The mission

By decree of MIPAAF charged under Law 12/21/1999 n.526, the consortium assumes the task of protecting and enhancing the precious stretched curd sheep cheese and protecting the entire historical-cultural and productive heritage of the Belìce Valley.

The functions of the consortium

Mark:It holds and manages the correct use of the "Vastedda della valle del Belìce DOP" trademark
Protect:It recognizes and protects all the holders of the Belìce tradition for the preservation of their traditions
Control:It monitors the whole production chain with regard to the production specifications in order to guarantee the quality of the product
Promote:It supports promotional activities, press campaigns, public relations activities at trade fairs, events and exhibitions

Organization chart

The board is the executive and administrative body of the Consortium. It implement the guidelines determined by the Assembly decisions.

  The IZS, the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sicily, and ONAF work alongside the consortium for the protection of Vastedda della Valle del Belìce PDO.
The first is the health authority accredited by the Ministry of Health to support the control activities carried out by the consortium.
ONAF is the National Organization of Cheese Tasters, committed to the promotion and protection of quality products such as the Vastedda della valle del Belìce DOP.

  The Slow Food foundation contributes to the enhancement of food and wine products and to the protection of agricultural and production traditions around the world.
The enhancement work is divided into different areas of intervention, through producers training or the strengthening the market and improving production processes.
The main project of the Foundation is the management of Presidia. Their task is to safeguard quality artisanal products such as the Vastedda of the Belìce valley.
